Blindness is not a fashion statement. And to risk blinding yourself for the sake of art or perceived beauty is simply misguided. There is a disturbing trend at the moment in Ottawa, Arnprior, Toronto and Newfoundland where an inexperienced tattoo artist is performing scleral tattoos. Yes, that’s the white part of your eye ball. The part of your eye that hurts like crazy when you get shampoo in it.
You may have seen cases on the news or over social media recently. There are countless stories of people suffering from ill effects as a result of improper “scleral staining”. That’s because we are talking about an extremely delicate part of the human body. Apparently, this form of body modification was developed by Australian artist, Luna Cobra, over a decade ago and he even says it’s not a safe thing to do. He warns on his website that the procedure is prone to ‘copycats’ who do not have experience in doing the procedure. This is a surgical procedure that is nearly impossible to reverse so if the artist’s hand slips or the needle goes too far, or the ink is too thick, you will wind up with permanent damage immediately.
Optometrists and other eye care professionals are trained for years on how to treat the eye and with their extensive knowledge it is unlikely you would find one willing to perform scleral staining. The risk is simply too great and you only get one pair of eyes. This is not something to trust to a body modification specialist.
At Eyes Focused on You our philosophy is to care for the whole patient. Yes, we treat your eyes but through them we see so much more. We know that the eyes are the window to your health. Please think it through before you permanently shutter those precious windows.
